The National Involvement Partnership involvement standards (www.nsun.org.uk/get-involved/survivor_involvement) can be used to monitor and measure the integrated and meaningful role of service users and carers.
One approach to the subject is to think of involvement in terms of purpose, presence, process and impact (PPPI). These four headings present a relatively accessible way of describing and monitoring involvement.
- Purpose: having a clear purpose enables everyone to understand their role and avoids the risk of tokenism and involvement for its own sake.
- Presence: the number of service users and carers involved; their characteristics, experience, and so on
- Process: what role(s) are are service users and carers occupying?; how is the process of involvement experienced?; use of good practice guidelines to involve people?
- Impact: what impact are service users or carers having?
